Self-Compassion

What is self-compassion?

  • Self-compassion is the act of being warm, kind and understanding to ourselves in situations where we may perceive ourselves as a failure, inadequate or when we are suffering.

  • We are often very compassionate to others like our friends, family and even strangers. We can be compassionate to ourselves just as we are to others

What is the benefit of being compassionate to ourselves?

  • Self-compassion can reduce the symptoms of stress and anxiety

  • Help us be motivated

  • Assist our development of a positive self-image

  • Promote a boost in our self-esteem

  • Build resilience in challenging situations or circumstances

Tips for practice in daily life

Some strategies you may employ to start self-compassion:

  • Ask yourself the question, “what do I need right now?” Often we put our own needs last

  • Be kind to yourself; engage in an activity you enjoy like going for a walk, reading a book, having a shower

  • Write down something you are struggling with and imagine that this has been written by a friend and what advice or support you would give to them. Now listen to your own words of advice and support to help you overcome your struggle
